Can't DELETE a Folder/File!

Hi,

I created a home-office network using a cable modem, router, and desktop
with a laptop and wireless card. Both PCs see each other and the
internet connection works great. I've set up a shared FOLDER on each PC
and a shared printer on the desktop which the laptop can use
successfully.

I can drag a file to the laptop's share folder, I can access it from the
desktop, and then go back to the laptop and just delete it whenever I
want.

My problem is that I can't do this on the desktop, that is, I cannot
delete any file that I drag to the desktop's share folder AFTER it was
accessed from the laptop. When I drag a file to the desktop's share
folder, I can access it from the laptop but after I'm done with it, I
can't delete it from the desktop's share folder. I can delete it ONLY
before it is accessed by the laptop. I have to go into SafeMode to do it
there.

I get a popup message saying can't delete the file as it is being used
by another program. Running Task Manager shows only windows explorer is
running which I use to locate and delete the file the same way I do it
on the laptop. Any ideas on what to do?

Thanks, Fred

Fred,

one suspicion is that it is a video file or another special type
of file where one of the Windows Explorer plugins looks into the
file for some information, then possibly crashes or freezes,
which is an invisible process.

One interesting test would be to kill Windows Explorer, then try
again. You can restart Windows Explorer by logging off locally
and logging on again or by opening a command line window (run
cmd) and typing: explorer

Some related info is at
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxCannotDelete.htm, but I guess it may
not apply here.

Thanks for the information. I've already tried most of the things talked
about at the site.

I've gone to the CMD prompt, and could not delete the file from there, says
access denied. I can do it if I reboot to safe mode.

I haven't been able to rename or change the shared documents folder - I see
if I can do that.
