My system can't defrag, can't run msconfig. can't access "services". Whenever
I try to run these programs, the program executes for a second, then cancels.
Every application software package runs fine. I added more memory, didn't
work. I bought a "registry fix" program, didn't work. I run ad-aware all the
time. A virus was found and was deleted, but the problems still remain.
When I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del, that quit working too! I can't see what's running
in the background to help me solve the problem. Any ideas? Thanks!

1. Get the latest and update your antivirus definitions, reboot computer to
safe mode, when rebooting, keep pressing F8 key, until you come to a screen
that allows you to boot up in safe mode. When in safe mode right click "my
computer" icon on desk top go to properties go to system restore, and turn
off. Now do a full antivirus scan and follow instruction from your
antivirus program. Reboot computer, go back to my computer properties and
turn on system restore.
Go to Webroot.com and download "spysweeper" 30 day free trial and full
VERSION, when installed go to options and update definitions, and run scan,
no need to touch setting as it is defaulted for normal use.
Reboot your computer go to start run 'msconfig' if successful check under
the tab 'start up', make a list of all start up programs and then go to this
web site and type in the.............. .EXE
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php If you find nothing here type the
program into WWW. SCROOGLE. COM or google.com or try this web site as well
it is excellent http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/a/. also go to
windows updates to check to see if it found any updates/patches for you.
Please post your results..

Thanks terry. I did most of what you said. Booting up in safe mode was the
answer. It allowed me to get to delete another virus that was found by the
free on-line scan by Trend Micro, on their website. I was using avast and
then AVG, both free antivirus programs, and well regarded. Both missed
finding it. Everything is working OK now. Some of those virus' are nasty
little buggers, huh? This particular one was called Bitdefender.exe.
