Hi. I have just set up a router with two computers hooked
up to it. I was able to get one computer to set up the
microsoft windows network correctly, called MSHOME. With
the second computer I did the same thing, but when I
click on MSHOME, i get an error. It says:

----------------------
MSHOME is not accessible. You might not have permission
to use this network resource. Contact the adminstrator of
this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available.

Greetings sunny,

Ensure all firewalls are removed while troubleshooting. Disable XP's firewall on local area networks. It's only intended for direct connections to the Internet. Make sure all machines have a common subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and the same workgroup name (MSHOME default in XP).

Having a problem similar to Sunny. I've followed all of the steps outlined in the 'wizard'. 'Firewalls' are down on both machines. Subnet mask is correct and 'workgroup' name is same on both.

Because I want complete access to each machine from either location I've also gone to 'Local Disk (C:) Properties on both machines and selected the appropriate boxes to allow network sharing.

I was successful in allowing printer sharing

In reading through some of the online help I came across something that hints at a problem in creating a local network if you are using Office 2000 Outlook for email. Does this make sense

And, make sure you told the Wizard that you connect to the 'net via a
residential gateway.

And, make sure you enabled the DHCP server on the router, and that all
PCs are set up as DHCP clients.

And, if neither Eric's tips nor mine cure the problem, ask again; there
are several other things that can be wrong.

Bob,

Have done all of the above.

What are "several other things that can be wrong"?

BTW, I can see both ways but can only open files from one direction. The route that is blocked gives messages that tells me to 'check permissions' or 'request exceeds server capacity'.

Hi guys. Thanks for the help so far, but I'm still
having issues. On one computer(Dell), I was able to
create the network and find the shared folder in My
Network Places. It says in bold "Local Network" and has
a folder that is called "SharedDocs on dell(Dell).

Now I did the same on my other computer(HP). But in "My
Network Places" in bold it says "Unspecified" and in that
catagory, it has the Mshome network icon, but the network
is empty. It doesn't contain the computer that it is on
either.

I've disabled my firewalls, and have done all the other
suggestions as well. Another other suggestions would be
greatly appreaciated. You have all been very helpful
already.
