I'm trying to create slipstreamed cd of xp and sp1a, and the first step is
to copy winxp pro cd to a folder created on c:\ called xp-cd. Just can't do
it. Through explorer I keep getting message "can't read from source file".
I've unhidden all files in folder options. Also tried through cmd prompt,
but apparently not smart enough to get it right

Sounds like a bad CD (scratches, gouges, pits, cloudy spot, scratched or cut label since the foil is underneath, etc.). Try using a CD cleaning and polishing kit to remove the damage if minimal to see if you can get the CD readable again. Otherwise, you'll need to make a call to Microsoft to get a replacement CD.

Appreciate the response, but this CD is perfect, and still installs. I can
definitely bring up all the folders by clicking on the CD and hitting
explore. I know it's something I'm not understanding. When I tried copying
using the cmd prompt it would copy, but the files and not the directories
copied. then I tried copying the directories, but there are so many folders
within folders that I gave up, knowing that I didn't fully understand cmd
prompt copying.

Hi Al

If you want to copy an entire Cd from the dos prompt you can do it like this:

XCOPY <source drive, directory> <Destination drive, directory> /s

For example:
XCOPY d:\ c:\cd backup /s

All the best
Dan

Oh God, Dantheman, I thank you so much. My new folder on C: looks just like
the CD, with folders and everything. Now that I'm late for work, I can't
wait to get back home and continue with this project. Thanks again. That's
why I love these newsgroups. What a fraternity. Al.
