Hi,
In XP I use to be able to copy a folder to the same folder in a backup drive. Now when I try to do that it says I need
twice as much room and puts the copy folder inside the backup folder instead of just updating the files.
Now I have to delete the backup folder and recopy all the files.

What am I doing something wrong?

Have a good day,

Sounds like path is incorrect in whatever script you're using to do your
copying. Try removing the final folder from the path that you're copying to,
in your copy line.

No I am just using Windows copy/paste
I have a 1 GB flash drive that has a 912 MB file and when I try to update by copying my source folder to the destination
folder it says not enough room need 845 MB more.

I am doing a right click copy in the source folder than a right click paste in the new destination folder.
Not sure about the drag?

May be to do with 'Previous versions' ie the system trying to keep an older
copy of files.

If so, try turning off System Restore for that particular USB drive

Right-click Computer > Properties > Advanced System Settings > System
Protection > Uncheck drive

Sounds like OP is copying one folder to another folder, should be copy a
folder to the folder containing the folder to be copied to.

e.g.

folder (that) to be copied is located at c:\this\that

place to be copied is e:\this, not e:\this\that

you should get a warning about folder already existing etc.

The Flash drive isn't there but thanks anyway I did this to a test folder on the same drive and it still happened as I
said in the other post:
I am copying the the same folder to another drive. It says do I want TO MERGE folders I say YES
Than it asks me if I want to copy files that are newer I say yes.
When I am done I do have a copy of the folder inside the other folder.
I am doing the conformations wrong I guess?

In Windows XP it just said do you want to over right the files in the folder and it did it right

PS: As I said the flash drive only has about 80 MB free so it won't give me the option to say yes or no to copy newer
files.

I'm a little confused in exactly what you're trying to do. As you said
in XP if you tried to copy files to a folder where there already was a
file with the same name it would ask you if you wanted to overwrite
the file.

Now in Vista what you should see when you copy a bunch of files is a
new warning window pops up, showing the details on each file you're
copying or moving IF one already is present with the same name in the
destination folder plus the details on the old file already in the
folder you are copying or moving to and then asks if you want to
proceed.

You can end up with a copy of a folder inside another. I'm going to
assume you don't want that and are simply wishing to replace old
copies of some files with newer versions. If that is what you want:

1. Expand the folder so the DETAILS on shown in the right window pane.

2. Select the files you wish to copy or move and the destination
folder.

3. Once the process starts as Vista begins to copy or move the files
if it sees a file with the same name in the folder you're moving
or copying to it will pop up a warning file by file
as it goes warning you. It will allow you to skip, meaning what
you were copying or moving stays in the source folder, cancel
which stops the job or proceed which allows you to keep the old
file or replace with the new version.

Once done you'll have ONE folder will all the new versions of the
files copied or moved there, not a folder in a folder.

YES,
That does do it BUT NOT on the flash drive cause it says only have 86 MB and it says you need 256 MB It doesn't know
that the replaced files will take the place of the existing files.
I guess?

Why not just delete the destination folder on the flash drive and copy the
new folder over?

Yes I can do that but where it is a flash drive it is very slow and takes about 8 minutes. to do that.

Why not just delete the destination folder on the flash drive and copy the
new folder over?

since you are trying to copy a folder to the same folder different drive, I would expect it to create a folder under the folder.
try you copy to a level above the intended folder.

The Agent folder is the only thing in that drive so I go up one level it's the drive itself and I still get the message
Can't copy you need 256 MB additional space. It doesn't know that only part of the files need updating.

If you select a folder, whether it is XP or Vista, and drag or copy that
folder to another folder - it becomes a "subfolder" in the target folder.

To copy only the files you must open the folder and select the files and
drag or copy to the target folder and they will "integrate" with the files
in the target folder.

Hi AJR,
Sorry but this never happened in my version of XP which BTW is a HP MCE OEM. I use to do this every day.
When I copied and pasted a source folder to the same name destination folder it just said that if the files have the
same name they will be overwritten with the newer files. IF I SAY OK.
