Can't connect to other computer on same network

I have 2 XP Pro computers with administrator rights
activated on each. Both are connected to a linkysis
router and share an cable internet connection.

I tried to use the ip address settings in ipconfig and
have also gone to www.whatsmyipaddress.com. I realize my
router is sending a "shared" ip address and directs the
information to the proper computer when information is
returned.

The one I want to access is properly configured to "Allow
users to connect remotely to this computer", but still
won't allow the connection.

I am trying to experiment with this before I take one of
the computers on the road. Is there a problem when two
computers are on the same network and working through the
gateway?

Thanks
