Cant connect to network or internet via Ethernet Cable?!?!

Ive just got a new computer and put Vista Ultimate on it. Specs are as
follows,
AMD X2 5200 dual core, 2 Gb DDR2 Ram, 320 GB hard drive and and NVIDIA
NFORCE NETWORKING CONTROLLER.

I can connect to the network and internet via my NETGEAR Router with no
probs usings a usb wireless key. But plugging the ethernet in just kills the
wireless connection and doesnt work on its own either. Ive tried putting in
the IP address and subnet etc etc manually but still no joy. When i go to
network map, i usually get cannot not generate map or i get my pc connected
to a gateway???

any help would be amazing...

Not familiar with that particular NIC. But it sounds like you may have a
driver problem. Have you checked with the manufacturer to see if there's an
updated driver for that network card? It sounds like your router is ok
(since you say you're able to access the internet fine using an external USB
network card).

I'm assuming when you plug in the cable to the onboard NIC and leave the
settings to automatically assign addresses using DHCP that if you open a
command prompt and type "ipconfig /all" the addresses shown for the nic are
169.254 and not something like 192.168 or 10.10?

When you manually assigned the Ip address, default gateway, subnet mask, and
DHCP servers for your network were you able to ping anything (either on your
local network or the internet).

For example: if your router that you are attached to is 192.168.100.1 and
you manually assign an address of 192.168.100.2 are you able to ping
192.168.100.1?
