New to the forum and not exactly sure where to put this, my home built computer recently took a serious dive. It first started with Firefox not connecting to the internet, I did not think anything of it and ignored it for about 3 or 4 months, not really sure how long, l even tried downloading updates but no luck. the system has been running fine for the past 4 years with no problems. I had a virus on the system that I was able to remove with antivirus programs. I am now trying to get net functions back with no luck.

If anyone has any insight I would greatly appreciate it.

Out of curiosity....

Do other net based apps work i.e IE,
What antivirus package do you use, does it have a firewall ?
Is your internet connection via modem or a network?
If the later, is it on DHCP or a static IP setup?
Do you have other computers on the network? Can you see them ?

I could write an essay at this rate.... A few more details of your set-up is what I'd like please....

Thanks in advance

Ja, No no net apps are currently working. I have AVG Free 8with windows firewall. Also Iam on a network at my work with a server that has a business level hardware firewall. the computer has been working on the system for about three years. Yes it has a Static IP that is part of a well thought out system.

As far as other computers, it still has a list but none are reachable.

I believe the problem occurred when the Virus attacked my system and now I need to rebuild. I remember that a dll was being ran in svchost or equivalent program and AUG tried to remove the threat.

dfroeliche,

IF its XP, just try restoring your PC to an earlier (working) date.

Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> System Restore.

Good luck.

Unfortunately System restore can not help. I have even tried the SFC \scannow utility with no luck.

OK, what do I do after that, how do I fix it after it's out? and what AV prog do you recommend.

Use Avast or Anti-vir both are free.
when you take out AVG reboot the PC go to network connections and right click then repair with MS auto detection.
