I am using Microsoft Outlook 2002 and have it set up to check for new e-mail
messages every 5 minutes. I am using a Cox Modem and router. Intermittently I
receive an error message 0x80042108 "Outlook could not connect to POP3
server." My internet conection seems to be fine and this is the only issue I
have been experiencing. As I said it is an intermittent problem and I might
receive the error message anywhere from one to 12 of these messages per day.
I am using AVG anti-virus and Windows Firewall which came with SP2.

You might try setting your mail check for a 10 minute interval instead of 5.
I've found that some ISPs don't disconnect as timely as they should (or
Outlook doesn't always disconnect timely). If you try to do two rapid
send/receives in a row and the first send/receive hasn't quite finished, it
will error out.

First, do not scan incoming or outgoing mail with an antivirus program.
I've never seen a report of AVG interfering, but it's safest to eliminate
the variables. Next, add Outlook to the firewal's exception list to make
sure that's not the issue. Also, see
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=318790 , although I don't think it's
applicable in your case.

I lengthened the time interval for the mail check to 10 minutes. I still get
the error message intermittently.
