When I boot up, the computer starts to load, then a dialog box "Log On to Windows" pops up, with my username (we have four users with logins on the PC. I don't use a password, so when I click to logon, it starts to work, then a dialog box pops up that says "A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. Error code: 0x80090006" I get the same message when other users log on. I'm running Windows XP Home. Any thoughts?

Hi Chris,

Hit F8 as the system first boots to load Safe mode. Logon as administrator.

Start/run regsvr32 regwizc.dll
Then start/run regsvr32 licdll.dll

If this doesn't help try these steps:

Start/run regedit. Delete the following keys:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Providers
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Providers

Exit the registry editor, restart normally.

Rick - Thanks for your prompt reply. Unfortunately, when I tried your first solution, I got the message "Load library ("regwicz.dll") failed - The specified module could not be found." licdll.dll did run successfully, however.

When I went to regedit, I drilled down into Software/Microsoft, but there was no Cryptography listing. I tried the second regedit string you gave me, but the only listing under users that was close was S-15-18. There was no Cryptography listing there, either. Am I using a different version of XP?

Hi ChrisO,

Expand a new copy of regwizc.dll from Safe mode. Start/run msconfig, click
on "expand file" (general tab)

File to expand: regwizc.dll
From: X:\I386
To: C:\Windows\system32

Where X is whatever letter is assigned your CD drive (you need your WinXP CD
for this), change it accordingly. If your system was preinstalled, you may
find this instead on the hard drive under C:\Windows\I386. If so, change the
"from" line accordingly. This assumes a default installation to C:\Windows.
If your installation is in a different folder, such as C:\Winnt, change the
"To" path accordingly. Reboot when finished and rerun the steps if you still
get the error message.
