Can't change windows sounds

Suddenly I can't change any of the windows sounds in my sound scheme in
control panel. When I open "sounds and audio devices", click on the
"sounds" tab, scroll down to the new mail notification box, and then
click on the drop down box to change the sound, or turn it off, the
whole dialog box just closes.

This used to work fine as I have turned off some of the default sounds
earlier and saved in a new scheme titled "my sounds".

What happens if you click on the Browse button instead of clicking on the V?

It's also easier to preview the sounds that way.

It works that way IF I want to change it to another sound, but I can
not change the box to "none" by using the browse button as by browsing
you get to the sounds, but not the choice of none. As recently as last
week it worked normally. Why would the drop-down box suddenly not
work? My only choice now seems to be to turn off all sounds.

I do not know why this doesn't work.

Try this, see if it works.
Open Sounds and Audio Device Properties...
Start | Run | Type: mmsys.cpl | Click OK |
Sounds tab | Highlight whatever Program event |
In the Sounds box, highlight what's there | Type
or paste: (None) | Click the Play button to activate the Apply button |
Click Apply | Click OK

No, that does not work either. As soon as I click in the sounds box
(to type "none"), as soon as I click there, it closes. Same
malfunction as aproaching through control panel.

How long has this been messed up?

Can you use System Restore to get back to before the problem showed up?

This Happened to me when I was first setting up sounds. I never could get
them to stick. I finally went in to the registry and did it manually and it
stuck. Now it works fine, Hum.

You can take a look there, because it was 8 months ago, and I seem to
remember that the problem was in HKEY_USERS and not current user ?

I guess it has been about a week or a little more. I thought about
using system restore, but I am not too familiar with how it works. I
have made a lot of changes to programs and added much music and files
in different programs. What exactly does a system restore reset? Are
all changes I have made within applications safe?

I do not use System Restore myself. I use a registry backup. Either way
you take the chance of some settings getting screwed up. I have had this
happen myself.

You have to weigh redoing some settings against the benefit of something
else getting fixed.

I did restore to an earlier point and it did work properly for a short
time. Now it has the same problem again. So there must be something
that is causing it to malfunction. I just keep all sounds turned off
now and I am not interrupted by anything when listening to music. It
is strange and frustrating, though!
