Can't change share name

L

Leef

Hi, here is the layout:

Computer1- XPHome, NTFS, simple file sharing, one shared drive, C:
name: emachine
workgroup: MSHome
IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

Computer2 - XPPro, NTFS, simple file sharing, one shared drive, C:
name: workstationibm
workgroup: MSHome
IP: 192.168.0.3
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

I can ping both machines fine. "workstationibm" can see the shared C: drive
and can access all the folders.
"emachine" can see the other machine, but cannot access it any further.
When trying to map to the shared C of workstationibm, from emachine, I can
see the workgroup, and the "workstationibm" machine icon, but when I right
click on it to map to the C drive, I get a box telling me that I cannot
access the drive and do not have permission.

I tried removing the share and then REsharing the drive and I cannot change
the name of the shared drive. It defaults to C$. Everytime I rename it and
go back in, it reverts back to C$. I tried disabling simple file sharing
and checking the permission to make sure it is set to everyone, and still
cannot rename the shared C drive to anything other than C$.

I am stumped. Can anyone offer any advice?

TIA,
Leef

The C$ share should only exist on "workstationibm" when simple file
sharing is disabled. In that case, you can create a new share name:

1. Right-click the C drive.
2. Click Sharing and Security.
3. Click New Share.
4. Enter a new share name.
5. Click OK to exit from each window.

Is that what you're doing?

This web page shows how to prevent the creation of administrative
shares like C$. I haven't tested it:

Dear Steve,

Is the C$ share what is preventing the C drive from being seen on the other
machine? I tried setting it to simple file sharing and it still showed as
C$. If this is not what is preventing the drive from being seen, where do I
need to look? Everytime I try to map to the Cdrive of workstationibm, from
the emachine, I can see the machine icon for workstationibm, but when I
click on it to map to the Cdrive, I get a message box telling me I do not
have permission to access the drive.

TIA,
Leef

Leef,

No, C$ isn't preventing the C drive from being seen. What you're
seeing is a permission problem.

With simple file sharing disabled, XP Pro validates the user account
that wants to access its shared folders. The usual solution is to
create matching user accounts (same user name and non-blank password)
on both computers.
