can't change services from automatic

Have windows 2000 server on a stand alone laptop (ie:not
networked) and was changing the unnecessary services
settings from automatic to manual because startup was too
long. Turned one off I needed for internet. I couldn't
remember which one I changed and had to use the internet
ungently.

I set ALL the services to automatic startup type and that
solved the internet problem. However, when I went back to
change some of the services back to manual, the computer
just hangs. I can't change the startup type nor stop a
service.

Tried safe mode where half the services are disabled but
still can't change services settings. It takes my little
baby about 15 minutes to boot up. HELP!

(PS: I need 2000 server as an educational tool. I dual
boot with xp)

Hi Leigh,
The Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service (NOT the Logical Disk
Manager service, this is different) must be set to Manual, or else you'll
see the symptoms you're describing.

To change the start type for the LDM Administrative Service:

1. In Regedit, browse to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\dmadmin
2. Change the "Start" value to "3" (manual).
3. Restart the machine.

You should now be able to start and stop services as needed. I'd suggest
comparing the service start-types to those from a working Windows 2000
machine.
