TOM or other qualified Tech: So your saying that when I
look at the Properties of a Folder (in WindowsXP
Explorer) and the Attributes box: "Read-Only" is shaded
green (and the others are blank) your saying the green
shading indicates the exact same thing as the box that is
blank, i.e. THAT IT MEANS NOTHING AT ALL? (SO WHY CAN I
CHECK A BOX AND IT MEANS NOTHING?)
Your also saying that the fact I can't "rename a file"
and the fact that the Attributes box: "Read-Only" is
shaded green "HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MY BEING UNABLE TO
RENAME IT"?
SO THEN WHAT "IS" PREVENTING ME FROM RENAMING IT????
(NOTE: Folder Options are set as follows:
-Show Hidden files and folders [Checked]
-Hide Extensions for known file types [Unchecked]
-Hide Protected Operating System files [Unchecked]
Also, how do I use the ATTRIB command from a prompt? I.e.
if I want to see attributes for a folder, what is the
command to say? attrib (and then what, the file location
as identified by looking at it's properties, e.g.:
D:\Name of a Folder\Name of a sub folder\Name of another
sub folder/Actual File name.doc <This is the path I see
when I open a document in WORD and look at it's General
Properties next to: "location".
So should I type the command EXCTLY as: attrib/D:\Name
of a Folder\Name of a sub folder\Name of another sub
folder/Actual File name.doc ? I typed the location and
filename EXACTLY as it appears when seeing the location
of it in WORD Properties and the error says:
"The System cannot find the path specified"
HOW FRUSTRATING, HELP PLEASE!

The properties view of a folder doesn't show its read- only status.
You'll notice the box is really neither checked nor unchecked, but
rather in an undetermined state. The attribute on the screen really has
no relevance when it comes to folders. You can view/modify the
read-only attribute on folders by using the attrib command at a command
prompt. What you will find is that your folders don't actually have
this attribute set and that setting it doesn't really change the
behavior of the folder in regards to access or being able to change the
folder contents.
