No matter what I try, I can't change my log-on password
for my dial-up. If I go into settings from the dial-up
box and change the password, press o.k. and then try to
dial in to my ISP, a different password pops up instead.
This password is 16 characters long but mine is only 10.
I've delt with Verizon, who told me the problem is with
Microsoft, and they told me I have to deal with the
manufacturer of my computer because IE came bundled with
the computer. And the manufacturer said it must be some
form of a spyware program and I need to rid my computer
of it. But of course they offered no help removing it.
What do I do?

If you are talking about the 16 " *'s " that show when you click on connect,
MS masks the password and the number of stars showing isn't actually a valid
count of what is entered.
When you try to reconnect, are you clicking on an icon on the desktop or the
one in networking screen? Sometimes changing the one in the networking
group doesn't carry through to an icon placed on the desktop.
Have you tried setting up a NEW Dial Up Account? Sometimes this helps in
such connection issues.

Two good tools to rid yourself of spyware is Adaware and SpyBot Search &
Destroy. There are a multitude of posts in this NG and the General NG that
cover these programs and many more.
