can't change html icon

I can't get my htm and html files to show the correct icon (it originally
displayed a 'load from file' or somesuch on right-click, but that window has
now gone) - they are stuck on the default general icon

I have tried rebuilding the icon cache, used Microangelo to try alternative
icons, even deleted them out of the 'file types' area to force a
re-association on reboot, but it is stubbornly stuck and I cannot change
their appearance

any suggestions as to what to do?

Keith

See if this helps:
Click Start / run / type "regsvr32 /i mshtml"

thanks for the tip Ramesh

I tried it, it gave me a response but the icons are still locked

the odd thing is that I can change any other icon but not these

I also tried to go back to a previous system restore point, but despite it
being turned on and various points highlighted, XP refused to load the point

I wonder if the two are connected in some way?

Keith,

Open Registry Editor and goto this location:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\DefaultIcon
Change the "default" value to "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\iexplore.exe,1"

thank you Ramesh - the problem is now fixed

it might have been your earlier suggestion did the trick - I also found the
root folder had defaulted to 'read only' for some reason

whatever it was, it is fine now

thank you

Most welcome, Keith.

Registering the mshtml file does change the entry
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\DefaultIcon\
(Default) "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe,1"

Not sure why it din't not work for you in first attempt.
