Can't change Desktop background

Hi,
I know, there was a post to this problem already, but I can't open it. So,
please, can someone tell me, why the Desktop tab isn't there anymore? I tried
different ways, but it doesn't change. Even if I try do put a picture
directly as a desktop background, nothing happens??!!??
