Hi, I have a brand new Dell computer with Windows XP (SP2). I am trying to
transfer video from a canon dv camcorder. For some reason, when i click on
"capture video"...the following message comes up; "A video capture device was
not detected. Verify that a device is connected and turned on properly, and
then try again".

I am not very computer literate and so I have read through all the "help"
sections I can find. I have tried to ascertain whether a firewire card is
installed in this computer but am still not sure?!

I have tried "add hardware" wizard and it just ends up saying to insert the
manufacturer's disk to get the "drivers". We didn't recieve an extra disk
for this. We can get still photos from the camcorder onto the computer...but
not actual video. Can anyone help please?!

Thanks for that Graham, I am having a read of the document now. Can you tell
me however if i would have a firewire already installed in my hard drive? I
have gone into the add hardware wizard and tried to add the
IEEE1394...however the wizard tells me to install a disk to find the
driver...I don't have a disk to do this. I appreciate any help you can give
me. Cheers

Dreads:

"Firewire" or IEEE 1394 requires specific hardware (typicly a card) in you
computer. Some newer machines come with this standard so you should check
the documentation that came with your Dell. Otherwise, you'll need to
purchase and install a FireWire card.

As clark says you need to have a firewire port already in the pc. Follow the
ensure your firewire port is is enabled and working piece to see if you have
one. If not, you will have to buy one.
