Can't browse without typing "http://"

Okay, weird problem here. On two of our systems, we cannot simply type the
URL such as "www.microsoft.com". We actually have to type an "http://"
prefix. If we just type "www.microsoft.com" then basically nothing happens
when we hit [Enter] or the ->Go button.

I've already checked the
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\URL\Prefixes section, and
those appear to be okay (they show [among other things] an entry for "www" =
REG_SZ http://

We've also done spyware/adware scans with latest updates to PestPatrol, and
also HijackThis and CWShredder--system appears to be clean.

Happening on two different systems, both XP Home SP2. Any other ideas?

Using Regedit, browse to the following registry key and make sure the noted
setting is correct:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoComplete]
"Append Completion"="yes"

also see the following values:

"Use AutoComplete"="yes"
"AutoSuggest"="no"

Do you have any wireless printers on your network? I had this problem at
home using an HP 2500 series printer. When I started tinkering around with
the printer and its setting...this problem went away. I don't know what I
did..but I don't have to type "http://" anymore.

One more question..I assume that going to a website via a link works
perfectly? I see this problem talked about all over this forum, but no one
seems to know what the problem is. I already did all the spyware checks.

Good luck.

YES!!! I have an HP OfficeJet on the network using its built-in "g" wireless!
We're also having troubles opening "My Computer". Whenever we open "My
Computer" or "Explorer" with "My Computer" as the focus, it experiences a
30-second delay (little "flashlight" searching).

Clicking links works great (again, they're prepended with http://). ALSO,
what we thought originally was the inability to browse without the http://,
is ACTUALLY a long (30-second) delay. It's like if you don't prepend the
http://, it's trying to search "My Computer" first, taking 30-seconds, timing
out, and then tacking on the HTTP from the HKLM\...\URL\Prefixes section.

This sounds really dumb, but I THINK the problem went away when I simply
turned on my printer. See, we don't use it often, so we turn it off (as
opposed to standby). I'm not a network geek but I think the PC is trying to
ping the printer, thinking its a server, but it doesn't get any response
(since it's turned off)...then, as you say, it times out. When it's turned
on, the printer responds something like "I'm a printer" so the browser then
moves on to the next step.

I have (had) the same problem with 'my computer'. In fact, the whole
boot-process is much slower. I wish I could send this whole thread to
someone at HP & MS since I'm now convinced it has something to do with the
way the printer works with XP.

If you find any other solution, please let me know.

Printer is on already. Actually, this is the primary FAX machine, so it's
left on 24 hours. Combinations I've tried that did nothing to change the
behavior:
1. Printer on, laptop and desktop connected to network.
2. Printer off, laptop and desktop connected to network.
3. Disconnected laptop (wireless) from network.
