Hi,

Im looking for a little assistance with a problem I have been struggling
with for a few weeks.

I have Vista Ultimate installed on a media centre and a laptop. When wired
i.e connected to the network via ethernet, all works as expected. I can join
my domain, browse network shares, print etc. When the work from wireless,
and try to browse the network or print I get a timeout, with and error
message saying "I dont have the right permissions to use the resource ..
contact your administrator". If I try to access a mapped network drive, the
error I get is "This drive no longer exists". The adapter is a Belkin G
Desktop Wireless adapter and on the HCL for Vista. I have a Laptop and
purchased a Netgear PC Card wireless adapter and am having the same trouble
there - so Im convinced its a Vista issue (maybe interoperability with other
OS'??).

A Google search seems to indicate im not alone in my frustration, but I have
been unable to track down a fix for the problem. Before anyone asks, let me
elimiate the usual suspects...

1. I have antivirus disabled on the machines
2. I have even disasbled my routers firewall (for test purposes)
3. I have tried creating identical user/passwords on each machine - although
Im sure that did nothing, as the workstations were members of the domain and
I was domain admin account to try to connect.
4. I have applied the LLTD patch on both XP workstations
5. I can confirm netbios over TCPIP is enabled
6. The wireless network is set to Private
7. File and Print sharing is enabled on PC's and Media Centre
8. Event logs give me and Event Id 1006 " Unable to authenticate against
Active Directory.... " which looks like the source of the problem, but I
cant figure whats causing it?!!

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

I get "The command completed successfully" . If I use the net view command,
i get a list of all the shares and printers on the remote host. Heres the
strange thing.. the problem does not seem completely consistent on the
network. I can create a new share in some cases, access the new share from
the Vista machine, create files etc... there are other shares on the
network I can access, view the top level folder, but when I try to drill
down to the root I get the permission error originally described. For the
majority of folders though, I cant access at all. I can see the share but
when I try to open it, an explorer window appears ........ and then I
wait... and eventually I get the permission error.. The even log tells me
the machine can contact the Active Directory Service.

Thanks in advance for your help

Ok, further to my last post... i have an update on my problem. I have
compared my settings to another laptop running vista connected to a domain
over wireless. It turns out the one that works is of a location type
"domain" my workstation is a location type "private". Network Sharing centre
has my workstation connected to my router then out to the internet...
whereas the working machine has it going through "domain.com" and out to the
internet. My workstation is a member of the domain.. I added it when it was
connected via ethernet cable.

Ok, I have removed my workstation from the domain, disconnected from the
wireless. Connected the ethernet, joined the domain, connected to the
wireless, disconnected the ehternet. I now have wireless connnected to the
domain......... but I still have the same problem. Restart the workstation
with ethernet disabled, and my machine cant identify the location type...
sits there "identifying" forever. No public, no private, no domain..... I
cant still get out to the internet, but thats about it... screwey huh....
?!?

Anyway,,, any assistance welcome. This is one ugly problem
