Cant boot in normal or safe mode after sp2 freeze

I recently got a laptop that had xp home sp1 and no anti-virus/spyware
programs on it. It was real slow so i knew something was wrong with
it. I installed free avg and ad aware and found a lot of junk and
deleted it, all were succesful. i then tried updating windows, i went
through the whole process of updating the updates as well.

Then it cam time to update with service pack 2. While it was
installing the laptop froze, it then started up saying i didnt finish i
need to uninstall. I did all that and started getting a bunch of
errors when i would reboot. So i tried to repair xp with my XP home
cd. I booted to the cd, skipped the first r option, went to setup, f8
and then R for repair (i know some ppl get confused and try the first
r.)

Everything looked normal and it wanted to reboot so i let it and booted
to the hard drive. Now Windows wont start!!! Normal mode gives me a
blue screen that disappears to fast to read after the splash screen.
its not sp2 so i cant stop it either with the dont reboot on failure
option. If i try to boot into safe mode i get a 'cant complete setup
in safe mode' and it forces me to restart.

i was able to get into windows booting to a UBCD4WIN cd but it wont
finish the repair there. How do i finish the repair or stop it? can i
delete some files or folders so it doesnt do the repair? any useful
commands i could use on the recovery console?
