I keep getting a blue screen that says registry cannot load hive file
\systemroot\system32\config\security. When I go to the recovery console
using the server cd, it takes me to the c prompt. It also starts a physical
memory dump. I need help!
Thanks,
eric

If the security hive is corrupt, it may be possible to rename the security
hive found in
%windir%\system32\config\security
to security.old
then try copying the most recent backup found in
%windir%\repair\regback
to
%windir%\system32\config\
If that fails you haven't much choice but to copy/ use the
original-as-installed security hive from
%windir%\repair\security
to
%windir%\system32\config\security

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks.
Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows
2000 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The
Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do
not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Note If the registry is corrupted
or missing or no valid installations are found, the Recovery Console starts
in the root of the startup volume without requiring a password. You cannot
access any folders, but you can carry out commands such as chkdsk, fixboot,
and fixmbr for limited disk repairs. Once the password has been validated,
you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard
disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer: drive
root, %systemroot% or %windir%

when i go to recovery mode, i'm at the d: prompt. how do I change the names
of the security hive from there?

If the registry is corrupted or missing or no valid installations are found,
the Recovery Console starts in the root of the startup volume without
requiring a password. You cannot access any folders. In this case you may
have to replace the file from a parallel install.

Best case start a new install of the operating system on a new (or separate)
partition. Worst case start a new install of the operating system on the
same partition but in a different directory (\winnt2)

| How do I do that?

Thank yooouuuu

Hello Dave Patrick,

I'd like to thank you for the great detailed reply! One of my colleagues had exactly this problem, and by using Google I came to this page. Your first tip did not work for me (then try copying the most recent backup found in %windir%\repair\regback) because that file did not exist. So I tried the second tip you mentioned (copy/ use the original-as-installed security hive from %windir%\repair\security to %windir%\system32\config\security). After that I rebooted the system and believe it or not: I was able to continue working with Windows as if nothing ever happened! I just needed to re-activate Windows, and some internet-settings had to be adjusted, but I think that is one of the reasons it went wrong in the first place. I just wanted to say Thanks to you! ;)
