can't backup downloaded file due to file's "security properties"

After I installed SP2 I noticed 'some' files cannot be copied to a CD. I get
a pop-up message saying: "Confirm Stream Loss. File contains extra
information attached to it that might be lost if you continue copying. The
contents of the file will not be affected. Do you want to continue?" I've
stopped here because I'm not sure what will happen to the file. This is
happening to file types downloaded from the net, camera's photos or items
right clicked and saved from the net. but NOT every every file.
The properties box of the files say: "This file came from another computer
and might be blocked to help protect this computer". There is a box that I
can click --"UNNBLOCK" -- which allows me to copy the files to a disk.

Is there a setting I can change to stop this from being added to files I am
saving to my hard-drive so that I don't have to do this manually to every
single file this 'block' has been added to? Thanks, Steph

It's a non-problem.
I got confused by that too. What it usually means, is that the Properties,
Summary tab for those files has information added by someone. Perhaps you
or someone else added notes in that tab to explain or remember something
about the use of the file. It's called an Alternate Data Stream and has
nothing to do with the operability of the file itself or anything else; it's
simply information ABOUT the file. CD format cannot support the ADS and
thus the data in the Summary data is not able to be copied.
You can however copy to other NTFS drives and that summary data will go
along with the file; it's an NTFS feature. CD formats are not NTFS.
The file itself will copy fine and nothing is wrong with anything. It's
just that the comments or whatever is written in the Summary tab cannot go
along with the file to the CD.
I see another poster gave you a link for learning about ADS; it's a decent

You answered my question so well. Thank you.

Just to confirm that what I'm doing is correct -- I can copy the files with
ADS in them to a CD and only the info in the summary tab will not copy,
right?

What's strange is that there is nothing in the Property's summary tabs.
There are read me files attached and in some photographs there is the basic
picture info, but that's it.

Do you think there is any reason to run one of the programs that remove the
ADS info added to the files?

One lingering question -- why didn't I notice this until 'after' I upgraded
to Win SP2?

I answered my own question about why this happened as soon as I switched to
Win SP2. Here's the scoop:
With the Advent of XP SP2 when a file1 is downloaded from the internet (i.e.
by clicking on a link in explorer2) to an NTFS volume an Alternate Data
Stream (Zone.Identifier) is created along side the downloaded file (i.e.
downloadedfile.exe:zone.identifier). The content of this file is used as a
security by Windows XP as security data to determine the publisher/source of
the file.

I'm all set now to let my files fly to that cd without any more worries.
