Can't attach file to email message

When I try to attach a file to an email message, either new or a reply,
Outlook hangs after I've selected the file(s) without attaching. However,
when I right-click a file and select "Send to Email Recipient" it works. Does
anyone know how to fix this? It just started recently; I suspect a Microsoft
update screwed things up.

I'm using Outlook 2007 with Windows XP Pro. Other than regular Microsoft
updates I haven't changed/added/removed any programs from my computer since
before this problem started a few weeks ago.
 
It happens when you select the file or after selecting the file and pressing
the Insert button?

Do you have a virus scanner installed which integrates itself with Outlook?
Uninstall this integration part of your virus scanner and try again; you'd
still be sufficiently protected by your on-access scanner part of the virus
