My son installed XP home edition on a new 120G HD,
installed great, no problems. He adds his old hard drive
as device 1, slave to the master 120 HD. The old drive
had WINDOWS ME on it, FAT32 file system, in the control
panel in XP, the disk management module show that the
drive is there but does not show a drive letter. The only
option is to delete the partition. We dont' want to do
this as we are wanting to move may GB's of files from it
to the new hard drive. What are we missing or what can we
do? After moving the files we intend to format the second
drive to the NTFS format. Thanks.

you can convert the old drive to ntfs with convert.exe.

are you able to explore the second drive in windows explorer?

No, we are not able to explore the second drive, I have
gone to the cmd line and it does not see the drive either.

try removing the drive,(unplug it from the motherboard) restarting your
system and then turning it off again. then reinstall the other drive and
restart. windows xp should auto detect the hdd.
