Can't adjust mouse speed

I've just replaced an OEM Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse
with a Logitech Cordless Optical one (both USB and with Scrolling wheels).
I downloaded and installed version 9.79 of Mouseware.

In the Logitech mouse properties applet under Motion, you can't set the
Cursor Speed
and it ignores the Acceleration radio buttons (but you can add Cursor
Trails).

When I first bring up the mouse properties applet it says:
"Some mouse settings might not work until you connect a Microsoft
mouse to a USB port or setup a MS mouse that uses Bluetooth technology,"
with the title: Microsoft Intellipoint."
but in the dialogs it knows it's a logitech mouse.

Computer: HP Vectra under XP SP2 (about 4 yrs old).

Try to uninstall the MS intelli-mouse software in control panel using
Add/remove programs. You may have to install the Logitech mouse again.

Un-install all/any "Intellipoint" enhanced mouse drivers.
Un-install the mouse from Device Manager (HID and Mouse sections??)

Reboot.

Remove and re-install the correct Logitech software. Older Logitech
mice use MouseWare. The newer ones all use SetPoint. You can not
inter-change the software as SetPoint/MouseWare only seem to "know"
the mice they have listed in themselves.
