Can't add downloaded music files (WMA)

I've successfully downloaded wma files but can't add them to my movie
timeline - each time I try to import a file into MM2 I get error msgs that
say "...is protected using digital rights management and cannot be imported"
- why is this and is there a way around this problem so that I can use these
files???
 
If you downloaded the file from a legal online music service, the file is
protected by digital rights management from being used in any other way than
being played on your PC or on a portable music device.

If a person was not worried about breaking the rules... I imagine they could
burn a CD from their media player with that song - assuming the DRM allows
that, and then re-rip that CD and have a slightly inferior copy of the song
that could be imported into a movie project.

Papajohn offerred a quick way to do this by:
playing the music in Windows media player or other media player on your
system and capture it as it plays as a narration
in Movie Maker..... see the Importing Source Files > Music/Audio page of his
site for more info.

Or,...as the other poster said, You can convert most protected audio files
by making an audio cd out of them and then rip them off the cd.

Here's what I have done in the past..... Make an audio cd from your
wma,...or other copy protected music file types. (i use roxio easy media
creator 7, but any application you have for making audio cd's should work).
After creating the cd of all the files you want to use in the movie project,
you will have to rip (copy) cd audio files to wav, mp3 or wma using any
application capable of doing so. I use simple42 (Simple Mp3 Maker) to rip
music from an audio cd as a wav or mp3 file. Once it's coppied back to a
folder or file on your hard drive it should be unprotected. Tedious, but
that's the way I'm presently doing it. Maybe someone can offer any other
methods.

Hello there,

There is a very simple solution to this problem...Don't download any more audio
files whilst the DRM is turned on....Just turn it off. If the software you use
to download will not let you do this....scrap it and get software that works
the way you want rather than the way someone else wants.

Well, you start by reading the help file for the program you are using.
If you find that the program you are using does not give that option you
should get one that does....MusicMatch (the one I often use) does give you
that ability.

None of that will help with files that already have a licence but the
easy way out of that is to burn them to a CD and then capture them back to
your computer using a program with DRM turned off.

Reading the manual is always a good thing to do...if not go to the Options
and read the options....the descriptions are self explanatory. To get rid
of existing DRM the easisest option is to burn those files to a CD, then
delete them from your computer and then using MusicMatch copy the CD to
your hard drive. Music Match does not have DRM turned on by default so you
should have no problems.
