I can't seem to get XP to let me add a printer. I have none in the system at
present and when I click on 'Add Printer' I get the error "Operation could
not be completed" Then, when I try to load it through the wizard, I get no
where either. When I load it through the device manager I get all the way to
the end, (It has recognized the printer) I get an "RPC server is
unavailable" error. I tried the CD that came with the printer as well and
still no luck. Any ideas? (HP DeskJet 3320)

Try Robert Orleth (from the MS Printing Team) instructions

OK, folks, let's not jump to conclusions - there is more than one way to
hose the print system completely (unfortunately), you may have the same
symptoms but chances are you don't have the same problem. Everybody that
gets "the RPC server is not available", please start the spooler using
either the Services applet from the Computer Management or the command line
command "net start spooler". If the spooler doesn't start, what's the error
message ?

As far as clicking on the Add Printer Wizard and getting "the operation
could not be completed", please run
"sfc /scannow"
from the command line.

It took me almost two days, but I figured it out. In my infinite wisdom to
try and reduce overhead in the system, I had inadvertently shut off the RPC
server, and related components. Once I restored them to run 'automatically'
the 'Add Printer' wizard came right back on line. Thank-you for your
assistance.
