can't add a printer

I am using Windows xp pro. I have a HP deskjet 3420
printer. The only way to connect it is throught USB. It
was working fine up intill about a month ago. I was trying
out an older Lexmark printer fax coper. To make a long
storie short the Lexmark didn't work with my system so I
removed it form the list of printers and I also deleated
its software from Program files. Now my HP doesn't work
and if you try to go in and add a printer. It brings up an
error that says "Operation could not be compleated." It
seems like I no longer have any support for any printers.
Did I remove some kind of system file that had to do with
printer support? Whats going on? I am pulling my hair out.
Any help that you may have would be great appreciated.

I was having the same problem at first. upgraded from 98

to xp, using lexmark7000 printer was not supported in xp
went to lexmark downloaded the drivers but still can't
print even with a compaq that is preloaded in xp
registry, I get error 29. but maybe you will be more
fortunate with a download from HP.
 
I am having same type of problem. MY XP is only a few days old. The Brother printer worked fine yesterDAY
Today--nothing and I get the same message
When I try to add a printer or put in the CD again it says something about print spooler service not running
 
I have a Lexmark All-in-One and I just bought a USA cord and I checked and recheck the connections. Yet I still get the message the spooling is not working. If not that I get trouble communication with the printer and it worked two weeks ago. If there is any thing that you can suggest please let me know. Pattycake
