Can't access USB drive

I have XP Home installed on my three computers and have them successfully
networked. We recently added an external USB hard drive to one of the
computers, and get the following message when we try to access it from the
other computers (via my network places):

\wdcusb2 (f) is not accessible. You night not have permission to
use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find
out if you have access permissions.

Not enough server storage is available to process this command.

If we create a folder on the new drive, and then drag it into shared
documents, then we can save files to that folder. So, it doesn't appear to
be a hardware issue.

Does the size of the drive have anything to do with it? It is an 80gb
drive.

Thanks
Maria

This error indicates that you are falling foul of the IRPStackSize bug.

The problem is on the machine you are attempting to connect to,
not the machine where you see the error message.

On the computer you are attempting to connect to,
Check the event viewer for an event ID 2011.

Usual fix :
You need to fix a parameter called IRPStackSize

On the computer you are attempting to connect to,
Set the IRPStackSize back to the default (15 ).
Perform the following steps:

1. Start the registry editor (e.g., regedit.exe).
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\lanmanserver\parameters.
3. Double-click IRPStackSize
(or if this registry setting doesn't exist, create it of
type DWORD and ensure the case is correct).
4. Change the base to decimal, set the value to 15, and click OK.
5. Reboot the computer.

Norton AV is usual suspect for breaking it.

There's a KB article about this, too.
You may have missed it, because it's applicability has not been updated to
include XP:

Antivirus Software May Cause Event ID 2011 (Q177078)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;177078

there is issue that you have enabled sharing of the drive
on your external drive.

right <drive> to share select sharing and security >
sharing tab
click on the words i understand but still.... these are
blue in color
now look at network and security tab
1) select check box share this folder on the network...
click on apply ...

Maria,

The MS KB article Ron wrote about is now updated to include Windows XP
applicability .

Do you really have
Norton AntiVirus for Windows
or
IBM AntiVirus 3.01N (Build 301.590)
and
logged events ID 2011 on the server log (the station with the new USB
drive)?

if not the problem is elsewhere.

The capacity of the disk does not matter.

From the server, when you see the disk on the my computer window, does it
appear with the small hand under the icon, indicating that the drive is
shared? Can you see the share on the same machine using Start | Run |
\\server\usbdisk ? Sure, change server by the name of the computer and
usbdisk by the name of the share.

When you share a folder on the disk, do you have the same problem?

And when you share another ordinary folder from the fixed disks?

Thank you Ron! You hit the nail on the head. Normally I check the KB
first, but for some reason I didn't this time. Thanks again for pointing me
in the right direction.

Thanks AR. I do indeed have NAV installed, and was getting 2011 errors.

I could access all our other network drives just fine, as well as a folder
that was on the drive in question.

Thanks for your help!
