Yesterday, I came home from work and was unable to access the internet. I
can connect and check my e-mail though Earthlink's e-mail program but it
won't allow me access to the world wide web through IE. I called Earthlink
customer support and he had me check for proxies (which I didn't have
configured), had me reset all of IE's functions and then had me uninstall
and reinstall IE. After nothing changed, the tech told me he had done
everything he could and to contact Microsoft because I had a malfuntioning
IE. I am at my wits end with this one. I have only had the computer for 3
weeks and it hasn't given my any trouble at all up until now. As soon as I
got it I installed Service pack 2 and updated everything. Can someone help
me with this one? TIA

A zillion posts to these newsgroups and over 900,000 hits when one does a
google search for "sp2 problems"

There are in excess of 60,000,000 home computers in the U.S. only. How many
successes do you think there are versus problems? 51,100,000 to 900,000? You
only read about the problems. AND I might add almost all of the problems are
NOT caused by Microsofts SP2. ----------Wake up.

Unknown,

Your post is one of the best that I have read today. If the original poster
would come back to the site and state what the final resolution was, it would
soon become apparent that SP2 is NOT THE PROBLEM. Our computer club in a
large retirement community, visits the homes of over 500 members each year
with problems that they blame on Windows (any version). We carry a CD with,
Ad-aware and SP2 and install them.

The major problems are visiting children and grandchildren that visit porn
sites, or change the files and folders to "improve" it for the older folks.
We remove an average of 150 adware & malware programs with each visit. This
last activity has dropped dramatically with the installation of Mozilla
Firefox as a matter of course with each visit. We have not had an instance

If Windows came preinstalled on your computer and no Windows CD was
supplied, then contact the dealer who sold you the computer. You have an
Original Equipment Manufacturer version of XP. If you were provided a
Windows (not restore) CD or purchased Windows yourself, then contact
Microsoft. Use the phone number from the XP folder that contains your XP
CD.

With all the bickering, I still haven't gotten a legitimate answer to what
this could be. I didn't mean to start a heated debate about SP2 or Windows
with this post. I just wanted help.
I have suspicions that my son (16yo) may have downloaded a dialer that has
taken over my connection. When I got up this morning, my computer was
connected to the internet and wasn't showing the connection icon in the task
tray as it usually does. I have the newest version of Norton's anti-virus
program, but I don't think it protects against dialers or the like because
it hasn't found any. I am going to download a couple of spyware cleaners
from work and take them home, I am hoping this will help. In the meantime,
if anyone has anything directly relevant and specific to my situation, I
would still appreciate a response. Thanks

Spank (figuratively) your son in a manly manner.

SpyBot S&D and Ad-Aware are available from MajorGeeks.com on
the spyware tools link.
