desperate

I use my school dial-up from home, and it seems like it
works and I log on fine. But I can't get onto internet
explorer, the window automatically closes by itself. I
also can't use any instant messaging.
Frustrated, I tried using aol, and the same thing happens,
it dials up fine, but I can't use the browser or use
instant messaging, however the aol email works for some
reason.

The last time my internet worked was right before I had
this 60 second shut down warning and the computer shut
down by itself. After that the internet hasn't been
working and my computer slightly lags.

I thought i had the sasser worm, so I downloaded the
microsoft updates from a friend's computer and tried to
install them my computer, but it said that it didn't
detect the sasser virus.
I tried to get updates from microsoft, but it says that
I'm not connected to the internet.
I scanned my computer for viruses with mcaffee, but there
are none. I also set up a firewall.

I really don't know what to do. The last thing I would
want to do is reformat my computer. Is there any other
way I can try to fix the problem? Pllleeease help me...

When did the 60 second shutdown notice occur? Is that recently, like
yesterday or the day before for instance? If this is still occurring, then
it must be cleaned and dealt with.

There was also a Blaster worm (similar to Sasser) that was a big issue last
summer, but there had been MS Updates addressing the vulnerability since
then. I would hope that you do check with Windows Updates regularly and
don't wait until something drastic happens to do it.

If you can, see the following:
NT Authority\System Error Message: "This system is shutting down. Windows
must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated
unexpectedly."
