Having a problem networking an XP to a ME machine. Going
through router, and can access internet from both
computers. Have gone entirely through file-sharing
troubleshooter to no avail: can ping the other computer,
protocols are set up, same login name, file-sharing is
on. Here's what I see:

- can find ME machine on network for ME machine, but
can't find XP machine

- can find XP machine on network for XP machine, but
can't find ME machine

- interestingly, can open working group icon on ME
machine, but NOT on XP machine (clue?)

Could this be some kind of permissions issue? I can't
figure this out - please help! Joe

I have pretty much the same problem. I've run all the
wizards, created all the disks, and it is even worse
now. At first, I could see each computer from itself, as
you describe below, but neither computer could see the
other. After running the XP setup on both the ME and XP
computers, I get a message that says "You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact....."
So now I can't even see anything on the network at all.

Anyone have a clue?

check the permissions on the shared files, and also
remove any firewalls whilst troubleshooting (XP built in,
router and any 3rd party software firewalls)

Thanks for your reply. I know that the sharing is set up
because I can find each computer on the network on the same
computer, but not the other computer. I don't know about
permissions, however, how do I check that?

Andy,

Here's what I stumbled on, and now everything is
working great. On your XP computer, Go to Network
Connections, right click Local Area Connections, click
Properties. See the box that says "Shows icon in
notification area when connected"? Check the box, and
then try to connect. Let me know if it works for you.
