I can see it and the folders and files in Windows explorer but can't access
any of the files.
When I'm booting up I sometimes get a message*slave drive failure, please
replace*
When trying to access any of the files I get I/O errors.

Tried various recovery programs but they can't see it or if they do can't do
anything about recovering the files.

Running XP Pro and the drive is NTFS. Any possible way to recover these
files?

Sounds like a dying hard disk. Download & run the diagnostic
program that your hard disk manufacturer makes available on
his home site.

Believe the message about drive failure.

People "in the know" do not have to recover files after a failure. They have
adequate backups "prior" to the failure! That's why backup programs are so
popular (-:
