Can't access external USB drive

I've got a 60GB USB external drive that is connected. When I try to
access it, I get a "Access Is Denied" error. When I try to reset the
permissions on the device and all files on it, I can see the dialog that
enumerates through every file, setting the new permission, but I still
can't get to the files on that USB.

The disk shows in Computer Management / Disk Management... and it shows
the size of the disk. However, when I right-click the disk in Windows
Explorer and select Properties, it shows the disk has a zero size. Ran
the error checker in Computer Management /Disk Management [properties of
the disk] Tools [tab] / Error checking... no errors found.

Ideas?

was the drive encrypted on a previous system? if not, then its definitely a
permissions issue.
access denied will also cause the drive to report zero size. can you take
ownership from the root of the drive?

Goes it get a driveletter assigned ? If not you have to do this yourself by
Disk management.

No, it wasn't encrypted. It is being assigned a drive letter, and I have
taken ownership as my user account (which is in the Domain Admins group
and the local Administrators group just to be sure).

Does the drive work on other machines? (not your previous machine and not
this one).

Disconnect the drive and Power off the computer. Connect the drive and
power on again. Same result?

Yes... works on two other WinXP Pro machines, just not the single Vista
machine. Also, all the other machines are in the same domain and I'm
accessing the drive using the same account.

It's no longer critical that I retrieve the data on the drive, would
just like to know that formatting it isn't the only option.
