For some reason, since I last had to reinstall windows, I can't access any of
the computers on my home network from network places. I have Windows XP Home
with SP 2. Two of the other computers have the same OS and the third one has
XP Professional.

I can ping all of my computers from each other. I can use tracert and
pingpath and find all of my computers. One computer can see one other
computer on my network, however, none of the others can see each other.

When I double click network places and then select entire network and then
microsoft windows network and then double click on my home network I get the
following error message:

(name of network) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you
have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not
currently available.

I am the computer administrator. All of the other computers except one, my
son's only have administrator accounts. I'm the administrator on his.

I use a Netgear WGU624 router. I have Zone Alarm firewall and AVG Pro
anti-virus.

All computers have Internet access. All computers have at least some of the
drives and the shared document folders available for sharing.

Any help/suggestions would really be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

bruce

Bruce,

The error "The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."
is most likely a NetBT setting or a personal firewall problem.

Look at logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and
"net config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read
this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download

Chuck,

Thanks for the info, I'll try it when I get a bit of time and let you know
how it comes out. Got this too late tonight to do anything with it.

Chuck,

Reading through all the material I came upon your point about leaving the
windows firewall service running. That wasn't the problem, but it got me to
thinking about other services I might have disabled. And sure enough, it was
one of those.

So, thanks for your help and I bookmarked your page.

Thanks for the update, Bruce. I'm glad my articles helped you to sort the
problem, if even indirectly. Do you remember which service was the problem?

Chuck,

I usually use Black Viper's website to configure my services. There are
just too many that are unnecessary taking up RAM.

The service that seemed to do the trick was net.tcp port sharing. which is
kinda funny as I now have it on manual, it's not running, and I can see the
other computers. Oh well. I also didn't have the computer browser service
running on any of the computers. I made that automatic. So, that could have
been the problem, also.

Thanks, Bruce. It's good to see BV back online too. My guess would be the
browser service, which does need to be on at least one computer. That will
definitely cause
