Purchased in Asia three years ago. I know I was using it okay on a pre-SP2
XP Pro computer last year.

Trying to install on another machine running XP Pro SP2 and not finding any
suggestions, except an old one to be sure and set the LPT mode to EPP in the
bios.

Help ?

Thanks !

A parallel port scanner is getting old!
Did you get the latest driver from Canon?

Software download from the UK. Choose English if you wish.

Thanks for the prompt response, Carl.

I did download the software in the link you gave (Scancraft (Canocraft)
CS-P) before writing my first message : when I try to run it, I get a modal
error dialog titled "16 bit Windows Subsystem" with the message.

"System\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers. VDD. Virtual Device
Driver format in the registry is invalid. Choose 'Close' to terminate the
application."

In addition to the 'Close' button there is an 'Ignore' button.

The other software downloadable at that location (Toolbox for SG v.3.8.X or
above (does not include driver) (2.2.3)
) causes a similar modal dialog error message if I try and run its
installer.

I tried going into the Settings/Printers and choosing the Canon Pixma 5000 I
have set to be a virtual printer to "Print to File" based on one other
suggestion, but rebooting after that made no difference.

Thanks, Orang37

Sorry you are having a problem with the software. Before you give up, try
downloading and installing again. Remove the failed software before trying
again.

You may have gotten a bad download, especially if you are in the USA and are
downloading from the UK.

You must have a wrong version of the software, because Windows XP is a 32
bit operating system, I don't know of the 16 bit sub-system in Windows XP.

16 bit implies Windows 3.1, rather than Windows 95 and up systems which are
32 bit.

You must know that model of scanner is considered "end of life" and you
can't expect much support. You will be lucky if you can get it to work. If
you have a old Windows 98SE machine, you would have a better chance of
making it work.

Today's new models are mostly USB connection and are quite cheap. You can
get a good scanner for around $100 USD.

Second reply.
You should select Windows Operating System then English Language and click
submit
In the dropdown, that will narrow you chose to two downloads.
You want Scancraft (Canocraft) CS-P (3.8.2) for the driver.

Carl,

Thanks very much for your two further helpful posts in response to my last !

I did get the scanner to work. What seemed to enable the installation of the
software was my going into the BIOS (HP machine PIV, about 2 years old) and
setting LPT1 to EPP mode. Note that after the two files auto-unzipped I had
to "manually" go into C:/Windows/Temp and open the folders and run setup.exe
myself, once per application, clearing the first applications unizips away
before running the second's.

Once I had done that, the software then installed, and I was in business.

Just in case it helps anyone else : here are the other things I did before
changing the BIOS setting based on net research : (Win XP Pro SP2)

1. Settings/Printers/Pixma 5000 : set to 'Print to File' rather than as
"virtual printer" : today I'll change that back and see whether I can have
both scanner and printer on-line. My guess is that because Printer is USB
should be no problem, but one article I found on the web suggested doing
this, so I did it.

2. Device Manager / Ports /LPT1 checked the check-box saying enable support
for legacy plug and play devices (don't know why I did this, equivalent to
throwing salt over the left shoulder ? seemed like the right thing to do at
the time). Probably not necessary since plug and play is not enabled in the
BIOS ?

Yes, you are right, that scanner is "yesterday's news" but it actually is an
excellent scanner with 600 dpi hardware and I've had very good results using
it.

Thanks again for your time.

Success!

I still have an old SCSI Acer 620ST scanner that has a 5X7 transparency
adapter.

Just try to find a flatbed scanner that will do 5x7 transparencies. (Yeah, I
know that there are 8x10's for an arm and a leg).
