I was planning to buy the 50 for about $100, but Staples is
currently running a promotion of $50 for the 30. What if anything do
I lose by buying the 30 rather than the 50?

The LiDE 30 is USB 1.1 and normal price is $50.
The LiDE 50 is USB 2.0 High Speed and normal price is $100.

You lose transfer speed for large images and the same price as normal (not
on sale).

I've had nothing but trouble with my lide30. First of all, Canon won't send me
my rebate from when I purchased it, they are saying they never received the
paperwork. Now the scanner suddenly quit working, and all I get is a message
about a twain error. I loaded Scangear, and it didn't help. Windows refuses to
load the driver, etc. I did some Google searching on lide30 twain errors and
found that a voluminous amount of people are haveng the same problems with
their lide30. Between the technical problems and Canon's reluctance to pay
customers their rebates, I advise against anything with the Canon name on it.
I'll never buy anything from Canon again.
