Canons and Cheap Ink

Hi

I had an Epson Stylus Colour 640 and it ended up clogging with off-brand ink
(white lines through text). Are Canons as susceptible to this? I've got an
i320 now, and even though the ink is a lot cheaper, the off-brand (Ko-Rec
here in Canada) is practically free. So how are Canons with cheap ink?

Thanks

Chris

Chris,

Epson printers seem to clog even with Epson ink cartridges. I have a
Stylus Color 800 and have to run multiple cleaning cycles all the time.
I bought a Canon i560 a few weeks ago. Haven't had to run a
cleaning cycle yet. It is a great printer.

Some people seem to have success with refilling Canons, but I refilled my
S900 with generic ink from a supplier that was recommended in this
newsgroup. Shortly after, the head clogged. So, I think I am cured of trying
to refill. I also learned that if your printer has to be sent away for
repair, throw it in the garbage and buy a new one. It's just too expensive
to be worth it. That's my two cents.

You recoup the cost of the printer with the savings you've made after 3 refills
(2 with an Epson).
So who cares if the printer blows up, cloggs, whatever?

What supplier's ink was it? It would help to know what it is that
doesn't work.

Ko-Rec uses a cheap universal ink which is garbage compared to quality
ink from a reputable supplier like AtlanticInkjet.

Never use any kind of universal ink from any supplier. You get what you
pay for.

I use and recommend refill kits and bulk ink from AtlanticInkjet in my
Canon i850. It's not as cheap as the stuff at local office supply
stores, but it works as good as the Canon original ink, colour matching
nicely, and is waterproof and lightfast with Canon or Office Depot photo
paper. Ordering online is easy and AtlanticInkjet is in Canadian funds.

It's quite a lot cheaper than Canon ink too, costing about $1 to refill
each ink tank.

I have very good expirience using MicroJet catridges for my i320. Also here in Croatia
is very cheap, about 2$ for BCI-24B catridge and 2,5$ for BCI-24C. It must be more
cheaper in North America.

Before that I used refill ink and refill many times...

There are "Second party" inks DESIGNED fpr the Canon printers, and there
are "GENERIC" inks sold for the Canon printers.

NEVER USE GENERIC INK!!!

Sorry to shout, but it is important.

MIS Associates (www.inksupply.com) is one of thr better "second party"
ink suppliers (there are other good ones).

The way to tell the good ones from the bad ones is by the stock number
for the ink.

If all Canon printers get the same stocck number Cyan (for example) then
the ink is NOT designed for the printer, and you are getting GENERIC
ink.

If the seller has different stock numbers for the Cyan ink for the BJC
series than he has for the S800 or I900 series, then he is probably
selling ink DESIGNED for the printer.

Expect to pay 8 to 10 (US) dollars (per color)for a 4 ounce bottle of
good ink.

"One size fits all" ink sellers cause more printer clogs than all other
reasons combined.

Jasper, could you tell us which ink not to use, and which supplier
sold you the stuff?

Thanks much!

I have been so hesitant to do this because it is an ink that a number of
others on this NG have recommended. I monitored fairly closely until I
thought I had found a good supplier. Since it does seem to have worked for
others, I am a little reluctant to name names based on what could be a
singular experience. I am a little torn, so please bear with me while I
dither.

The three inks people seem to like in Canons are formulab (which I use), MSI
and Atlantic. I'm sure there are others. Wonder if it was one of these?
You can respond to my email address, just remove the "nospam" that's in
it.

I ask because I am about to purchase a 960 and will be interested in
refilling cartridges.

I go to cfriends dot com
Got ink bottles and syringes and rubber stoppers for all 6 cartridges for $73
(well, it's still in the mail and may arrive shortly). Look for the selection
for i960 under Canon Refill Kits. It seems quite specific enough. Buying 6
cartidges at the store would cost me just as much, and give me far less ink.

I get about a ream of paper printed for a cartidge of black ink, and the other
colors seem to run out about the same day whenever that is. (Canon S600
experiences).

I've been using ink from www.inksupply.com Also known as MSI, for
several years in my Canon printers, and I print a lot. (75 prints last
night)

I have at least one night a week with that much load.

They are currently working on a black and white inkset for the Canons,
and on a pigmented ink for them.

Prices are NOT the cheapest, but thier ink seems GREAT to me.
