Canon S820 printheads

Am I being conned? Canon UK helpdesk suggests I may have to buy a new
printhead for my S820D. Of the 3 UK telephone numbers I was given to obtain
one, 2 are invalid numbers, the third is a repair centre for Canon products.
Can the heads be obtained from the usual sources, e.g. Dabs, Novatech etc.?
I've heard that replacement printheads are frighteningly expensive. Can
anyone with one of these printers confirm the normal lifespan of the
printhead?
My example is only 20 months old, and I chose the machine precisely because
of the possibility of replacing individual ink tanks rather than the Epson
'throw the whole colour tank away' philosophy.
My confidence in the ability of printer manufacturers to produce a quality
product is severely dented - it will soon be non-existent.

since the C80 (which I'm still using) there have been individual cartridges.
Including now the C64/C84 and the 950/960.
I also run an S-820, that is when the amber lights will stay off for an hour
or so. It indicates continually that there is a paper blockage. The solution
is out with the head - a short soak in Windolene, dry it, and off we go
again: but never for long.
The Canon printheads are plagued with problems - almost as many as the
British concept of adequate service when things do go wrong. I've seen them
selling for around $70 or so. Which is probably £70 in our twisted economy.
The box shifters you name have little interest in service or spares you may
find.
If you hunt around this newsgroup and others you may find many disallusioned
Canon owners and it always problem heads.

You can only buy them from A Canon authorized repair center.
The BC50 is only for the BJC-8200.
