The ink cartridges on my 1.5 year old my Canon S500 seem to empty way too
fast compared to what they're supposed to - i.e. after printing dozens of
pages, not hundreds or thousands. I'm generally printing in "draft" mode.

The printer's connected to my computer using the USB port.

Is there something I can check about the printer to troubleshoot this?

Thanks.

What are you printing? Mostly text?

If you do high volume printing, consider buying a Laser. Toner carts last
must longer than ink cartridges.

Have you refilled them yourself? I found that when I refilled those on my
S520 they leaked profusely, until I started wrapping the cartridges tightly
with electrical tape. Even so, there is some leakage because of the way the
original plastic at the top of the cartridge (where you punch the hole)
wicks the ink out. Make several really tight passes with electrical tape
and this should help.

Use hot glue to seal the hole, no leaks.
It uses a lot of ink because of cleaning. If you don't use it once a day or
turn it off, it goes through a cleaning cycle before printing and burns
through the ink.
I don't know the cure. My S600 does the same. The more cleaning the more
ink. If I leave it on and print something every day the ink lasts much
longer.
