Recently bought a canon s45. Installed its s/w w/o
prob., but when camera was connected (via USB) it wasn't
recognized giving the following error message:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware
because a previous instance of the device driver is still
in memory. (Code 38)

Re-starting did not solve this problem, though moving the
camera around on different USB ports sometimes (though
not always) worked... Is there a way to clear 'previous
instances of a device driver'? It was suggested that I
disconnect all other USB devices and, while it does
appear to work (mostly) is generally is not practical
since some devices more or less need the drivers re-
installed when they are again connected (i.e. printer).
This is frustrating as some days it works fine, and
others it is not recognized.

Thanks in advance.

You can use the device manager to remove USB devices and
then reinstall those you want/need...

When the camera is plugged in, I can only find one
instance for Canon S45 via the device manager. I have
removed the drivers etc... before and restalled (several
times, actually), but I still get the same error message
even though the computer has been restarted several times
during the process...

Brian.

In device manager, select view hidden devices and check if there are
instances viewable, delete those.

Sorry, tried replying earlier but the newsgroup didn't
post.

Anyway, the device manager only shows one instance of the
Canon camera, with the same xp error message. I have
tried removing and reinstalling the device several times
with no change.

XP seems to require the s/w driver supplied from Canon to
recognize the camera at all (if it *is* to recognize
it). The only problem that I can see is that I plugged
in the camera a bit prematurely (i.e. before I installed
the s/w) the first time. Since then tho', like I said, I
have removed and reinstalled the s/w several times with
reboots as required.

I have used device manager to remove this device, re-
installed, had it work (sometimes) until the next
computer reboot (for whatever reason), and then lost it
again with the same Code 38 error. Replugging in the
device doesn't make this problem 'go away' from this
point...

This problem seems only to be with my system, as I have
ran the s/w successfully on other computers (including
Dells, which is what I am currently using).

Brian.
