Whenever I try to get the Powershot software loaded, I get
two differenct error messages. The first, states
something like "there was a problem during hardware
installation that may cause a problem". The second
was "windows cannot load the device driver fro this
hardware because a previous instance of the device driver
is still in memory (code 38). I see not explanation of
code 38. Is it because I have a lexamark X83
printer/scanner/fax in another usb port?? How do both to
work and be attached at the same time.

You must deinstall and then reinstall the software and drivers. Connect
the camera (even though it errors) and from Device Manager, expand the
view to show hidden devices. Remove anything related to the camera.
From Add/Remove Programs, remove all of the Canon software. If there
is anything in the Scanners and Cameras control panel, remove that.
Shut down. Disconnect the camera. Restart. Do not connect the camera.
Install the Canon software and drivers from the installation CD and
connect the camera when instructed only. This should provide a
corrected installation.

Dear Q,

I am a novice computer user, however I am having the same
problem that John had. I did everything that you said
step-by-step, and it still is giving me the same code 38
error. I even downloaded the driver from Cannon and used
that but still "Code 38". Is there anything else I can
do to fix this. Is there an entry in the registry that I
might be missing? Or is there something else I don't
know about? ANY help is appreciated it's really annoying
not to be able to download your pics directly.

Thanks,
Sam Castro

Obviously there is a problem elsewhere if the reinstallation will not
work. Take a look at the Event View logs and see if there are errors at
the time that the camera is connected that might point to a source.
What other divices are connect to to USB when the camera is installed?
Is there a 1394 device active? Do you reboot often?

Additionally, do you have a scanner installed?

Is there another WIA device, besides the A40, listed in Add/Remove
Programs? It might be conflicting with the Canon driver.

Q

powershot a40 and xp

I have a cannon powershot A40 with no software or drivers.

When you download from the cannon website get the latest wia twain driver for xp

in english. Xp will block downloads by default so make sure you over-ride that.

It then extracts to a temp file location, this has not installed yet, make a note of location.

Go into location (make sure it's the right place) and search for setup executable file.

Click on this and it will run and say something like wia tain driver for powershot A40.

Your still not finished, it will say something like connect your camera and turn on to finish installing. This may work or may not. Go into control panel/add hardware search for your a40

which should be there, select it then auto search for drivers. If you installed the driver correctly it will find this and complete giving you a selection of likely programs to run when camera is connected.

You can also do this from device manager if you prefer that route.

Hope this is helpful to someone.
