Canon PIXMA IP4200 - printing with only black catridge

I have one question about Canon IP4200...

The printer has 5 catridges (not compatible catridges yet because of a
chip)...

I am wondering if I have only black one full, and others empty is it
possible to print only with black ink or do I have to buy the whole
set all the time?

Are there any tips and tricks?

My tip, sell it. The carts problem appears to be a major problem for a lot
of people, i luckily
have a IP4000 but if it broke tomorrow, as much as i like canon, i wouldnt
buy the IP4200 because of the ink. If you're resulting to such measures as
only trying to print in black because of the cost you are not
enjoying/making the most of having a printer

no problem at all. just trot down to staples and buy the canon ink and
install them. no problem at all.

there is not difference in the new ink as far as results and it lasts
longer. the ip5200 is more of a replacement for the 4000 due to speed.

You can print with just black, at the risk of burning out the head.

This printer will not print if any of the cartridges are empty or reported as
empty. This is a deliberate design mechanism to prevent damage to the print
head which would otherwise burn out. There is no way to overcome this unless
you refill the cartridges and answer the prompts which will result in no ink
level indication, or buy replacement cartridges.
There are reports of some replacement cartridges being available with
instructions on how to move the chip from the original to the compatible.

Yes, I saw the eBay advert for compatible iP4200/iP5200, etc.
cartridges. They do give instructions when you order for moving the
chip, which sounds confusing. Wouldn't you get the same result if you
just snapped off the chip from an original cartridge, refilled it, and
re-attached the chip??? How does the chip know it's a different
cartridge? Does it "sense" for a different cartridge???

Personally, I'd prefer to refill with the newly formulated HobbiColors
version of "ChromaLife 100" refill ink for the iP4200/iP5200 series as
I'm comfortable with HobbiColors quality.
