I picked up this scanner at a garage sale, and it
came with USB "A" cable. But the cable won't
plug into the back of the scanner.

There is some sort of connector in the back, and
it's a little recessed into the cabinet. My guess is
that there's an adapter clip that slides onto this connector,
and turns it into a bona fide USB "A" connector.

Can someone verify this theory? Where can I get the
part?

The USB cable should be A to B USB cable. A on the Computer and B on the
Scanner.
You can get that cable just about anywhere.

It the connector on the scanner is recessed you may have to trim the rubber
on the B connector to fit into the case cutout.

You can trim the rubber around the metal with no harm to the cable. As long
as you don't cut too much away.

No, the connector is just plain the wrong size for
the USB cable. I believe there's a missing part
that slides on the existing connector.

OK, after some Web searching, I discovered that
the cables I have do not have B connectors, but
"mini-B", in a couple of shapes. I think a plain
old USB A to B cable -- which I've never had to
use -- will do.

Thanks!

The Mini-B are usually on Digital Cameras.
Everything else uses the plain A to B cables.

Example picture of the connectors.

Click zoom the picture, to get a good look.

The above cable is too short, it is only 3 ft.
Walmart has the 6 ft A to B cables, if you live in the USA.
