Canon MP600 not detected

I am trying to install a Canon MP600 multifunction printer on an XP
machine. The setup instructions tell you not to use the Windows
Hardware setup wizard, but to follow the routine on the setup disk -
connect the USB cable and switch the printer on when instructed.

OK, what happens is that as soon as you turn on the printer the hardware
wizard appears, the balloon says that an MP600 has been detected. If
you then cancel the wizard, the setup routine just hangs. This happens
every time you run the installation.

Windows must be able to detect the new printer if the hardware wizard is
appearing. The problem seems to be with Canon's setup routine.

The USB port on my computer is OK, because I can plug in a flash drive
and it is detected straight away. I've tried three different USB
cables, including a new one, without any luck. I've shut down the anti
virus software and other start up programs before installing, but it
still doesn't work.

Other than trying to install it on a different machine, which Canon's
technical support has suggested, can anyone offer any more help?

Thank you,

Steven Thompson

Steven,
Do not attach the USB cable until after you start the setup CD.
The install wll ask, when necessary, to pick a port. This is where you attach
the USB cable and within minutes you will have a configured MP600.

Hi Michael

I don't. The installation routine tells you when to attach the cable
and switch on the printer - that's what I have been doing.

I've tried to select the port manually instead of automatic detection,
but the USB port isn't listed. I think that is the problem.

So you are not connecting the USB cable until the installer tells you to?
That's is the correct process.
It is very common for the wizard to start as soon as you plug in the cable and
power on the printer, don't cancel the wizard, just ignore it. See if the
printer installs anyway.
To be safe, before you try this. Assuming you are using WinXP.
Open the Printers folder in the Control panel. Select File, Server Properties,
Drivers and if the printer is listed there select it and click Remove. This
will remove any resident drivers for this printer which may now be impeding
installation.

Tony, all that happens is that the installation times itself out, saying
that the printer was not detected.

I've checked Server Properties and it's not listed there.

Are you using a USB port at the rear or front of the computer?
Front ports on some motherboards are somewhat unreliable.
I assume you are not using a USB hub, the printer is directly connected to the
PC right?
Have you rebooted the computer with the cable disconnected before retrying the
install, worth a try if you haven't done that?
If you go to Control Panel, System, hardware and select Device Manager. Are
there any errors against any device under Universal Serial Bus Controllers?
If you click the + at the left of Universal Serial Bus Controllers a list of
controllers on your PC should appear, try uninstalling every one of them. Then
reboot your PC, Windows will automatically reinstall the USB controllers. Try
reinstalling the printer.
I noted that the latest drivers for this printer were published in September
2006 and are version 1.01, if your install disc is an earlier version you
should download the 1.01 drivers and try using those.
I'm running out of ideas, let us know how you get on with the above.

Tony, yes I've checked all of these! I think my next move is to
reinstall XP on a different PC, and try to install the printer there.
At least that will establish whether it's my other PC at fault or the
printer!

I'll keep you posted.

Cheers

I finally managed to get the printer installed, but I had to reinstall
Windows to do it!!

Seems like a nice piece of kit, though.
