3 or 4 months ago I installed a canon LIDE25.

Soon after I started to get error messages that wanted to send a
report to MS. It seemed that the system had to shut down because a
driver was trying to access an inappropriate area of memory.

There were three likely culpritsd: Skype which had been updated, my
wireless mouse which had been changed, and the scanner. I uninstalled
Skype and the mouse driver. It simply got worse.

I never believed it might be canon.

It got so bad that I couldn't use IE or windows explorer. Itried to
restore an image from the end of last year but it corrupted the
partition table. Reluctantly I had to reinstall.

With barely any apps installed I downloaded two drivers from the web.
These were LiDE25_11000WNEN.EXE and WIAdriverLiDE25.EXE. I did this
because I couldn't put my hand on the english CD only on the foreign
languages one.

I installed the scanner and then the drivers. Immediately I used the
scanner the same problem started. I can no longer use My Computer or
Windows Explorer. My O/S is XP Pro.

Anybody goy any useful advice?

Ensure you totally uninstall the scanner before reinstalling it. There
should be an uninstall utility on Canon's website.

Thanks. I'll do better than that. Yesterday afternoon when I had
installed only XP, MS Office 2003, and a couple of old utilities I
took an image of the C: partition. I intend to restore that image
tonight.

If it works there won't be any vestige of the scanner software left.

When you think you have uninstalled it completely, set the following
environment variable (you will probably need to reboot to make it
effective):

devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

Then open device manager and click 'View', 'Hidden Devices'. You might
be surprised what you find - right-click and uninstall as appropriate.

Not so fast!

When I ran Acronis True Image v8 to restore the image to the C:
partition it decided that the image was corrupted. Now I am in a
dilemma. Is it really corrupted or has the scanner driver damaged the
partition table and made thhe image appear to be corrupted.

If I run it anyway and it is corrupted I shall finish up starting
again from scratch with a fresh install of XP and formattting the
entire HD.

If it does restore the image I might be no better off than I am now
with the scanner completely eradicated.

How can I tell?

Hi,

The CD which came with my Lide 25 has all the drivers on it. Both English
and Foreign language, PC and Mac.

Mine came with two separate CD's - one English and the other foreign
languages. Sadly, I can only find the wrong one. The right one must
be in some obscure corner. We've searched high and low. It's
probably in the pages of a book.

It doesn't matter too much. The right disk was used in the original
installation and afterwards the error messages started. The drivers
that I downloaded the other days might not have been as good and maybe
that's why the error messages came thick and fast. They've stopped
now that I've eradicated the drivers.

I'm in contact with canon Suppport now but so far they've only asked
for more information.

The drivers that download will be the most recent. You do not need
the CD for anything other than the bundled software. The drivers and
CanoScan Toolbox can both be downloaded from the website. Toolbox is
not required in order to use the scanner.

You mentioned that you downloaded "LiDE25_11000WNEN.EXE and
WIAdriverLiDE25.EXE". Do not install both of these at the same
time. It is recommended that you install
"LiDE25_11000WNEN.EXE" which will be ScanGear. As per the
Readme.txt file for the WIA Driver, the two drivers can not be
present on the same system at the same time...see below.

3. A General Tip on Usage
======================================================================

o The Canon Scanner WIA Driver and ScanGear CS (TWAIN driver) cannot
be present (installed) on the same system for the same scanner at
the
same time.
o Some of the Canon Scanner WIA Driver functions are limited in
comparison to ScanGear CS. Please use ScanGear CS if you wish to
use the functions not included in the Canon Scanner WIA Driver.

I highly doubt that the installation of the scanner driver could have
corrupted your partition or image backup. I guess it's not
impossible though. But if that was the case, I suspect many other
users of the same scanner to be having the same issue. The drivers
for the LiDE 25 are not invasive in any way. Though there is
obviously an issue going on with your system. If you end up
formatting your hard drive and starting from scratch, be sure not to
install the WIA driver. If you decide to use your image backup
software, you may want to try and restore the image prior to
installing the scanner. If no errors, then install the scanner
driver (ScanGear).

Good luck.
