Running Xp home. I've downloaded the driver and it looks like it
successfully installed. However when I plug the scanner in the USB port it
doesn't show as a LIDE 50 and I get a message that it can't find the driver.
I've tried this 4 times, uninstalling, rebooting, installing, etc..with no
luck. Anybody have any ideas??? My daughter needs the thing for a school
project.

You have not given enough details.

What driver did you download and install? There are several on the Canon web
site for the LiDE 50.
Did you read the Quick Start Guide/ Setup Instructions?
Did you read the Windows XP compatibility link?

This link is to the Support site for the CanoScan LiDE 50 scanner.
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=SupportDetailAct&fcategoryid=235&modelid=8052

Here they are.

1. I downloaded driver CanoScan_LIDE50_v7131 to my download folder.
2. The scanner is Unplugged from the USB port.
3. Opened the file in step#1.
4. Just to make sure clicked on the WindowsXP uninstall link and ran it.
5. Rebooted PC
6. Opened the file in step #1
7. clicked on the Windows XP install link which ran setup.exe which appeared
to unzip some files.
8. plugged the scanner into the USB port and received a message that found
device CanoScan and then asked me if I wanted to install the driver wither
from the internet or from a CD (lost the original).
9. ????? still does not work. Any help would be appreciated.

My answer at the bottom of post.

ANSWER:
From the Canon download site, Did you follow these instructions?

2. Downloaded files are saved in the specified folder in a self-extracting
form (.exe format).
(I corrected bad English here)
3. Double-click the files to decompress them, a new folder will be created.
New folder has the same name as the decompressed file.
4. Double-click the Setup.exe file. to start installation.

Copied from your previous post (above).
Why make an easy thing into a hard thing?
1. I downloaded driver CanoScan_LIDE50_v7131 to my download folder.
2. The scanner is Unplugged from the USB port.

The above is OK.
The rest of this is plain wrong!
3. Opened the file in step#1.
4. Just to make sure clicked on the WindowsXP uninstall link and ran it.

What uninstall link?
5. Rebooted PC
6. Opened the file in step #1
7. clicked on the Windows XP install link which ran setup.exe which
appeared to unzip some files.

Why did you do step #4?
Now you have a failed install, Windows XP does not like that.

HOW TO DO IT RIGHT.
Unplug the scanner first!

Run Windows Add Remove Programs, in the Control Panel. If you find any
Canoscan driver in there, remove it. Look in Device Manager, see if any
Scanner driver is red or yellow marked, if so remove it.
Reboot if you removed any programs or devices.

Use Windows Explorer or My Computer: ( I prefer Windows Explorer)
The downloaded file is named SGCS7133WNEN.EXE
When you double click the above file, a folder named SGCS7133WNEN is
created.
In SGCS7133WNEN folder are two files:
README.TXT
SetupSG.exe

In Windows 2000 or XP, the system administrator is required to install or
uninstall ScanGear CS.
You must be logged into Windows XP as administrator.

Readme.txt has good information about using and installing ScanGear. You
should read it!
Double click SetupSG.exe.
LET windows do it's thing!

After SetupSG.exe gets done, reboot (SetupSG should ask to re-start
computer).
Plug in and turn on Scanner. Windows XP should then install the driver for
the scanner. Or make a connect sound.

Open a Photo Editor such as Photoshop, Select TWAIN source (In Elements 2 it
is File>Import>TWAIN_driver_name). Acquire the image.

If you do not have a Photo Editor, get free Irfanview and plugins.
http://www.irfanview.com

All should be working now.

I've followed your instructions to a T. The problem appears to happen when
I run the SetupSG.exe. I never get a response when I enter this command
i.e. a window that says to reboot. I waited 20 minutes and nothing.

There is only one account on this machine and it's the system administrator.

If nothing happens, then download the driver again. You must have gotten a
bad downloaded file. I found that SetupSG.exe does not ask to reboot.

What does happen, is a dialog comes up telling of extracting files, then
leaves the screen.

The dialog looks like this:
http://www.carlmcmillan.com/Temp/

I will remove this page very soon.

Just to be safe, Reboot the computer manually after this dialog leaves the
screen.

Make sure you have downloaded the correct driver. For Windows XP, it is the
first one under "Drivers".
English drivers/applications

Select a driver or application from the list below.

Drivers
CanoScan LiDE50 Scanner Driver ScanGear CS Ver. 7.1.3.3 for
Windows XP

You do not "enter a command". You go to My computer, navigate to the
location where SetupSG.exe is located, then with the mouse you put the
cursor on the filename "SetupSG.exe" and click the left button quickly,
twice. (Click, Click).

After double clicking SetupSG.exe You will see on the screen a dialog that
tells you, Files are being extracted. Then after the dialog is gone. You
plug in the scanner and turn it on, Windows with then install the software
when it detects the scanner on the USB port. (It takes a few seconds, for
Windows to detect the scanner).

For Your Information:
The following assumes that Windows XP is installed on C:.

You may have to configure Windows Explorer to show hidden, System folders
and files.
After the running SetupSG.exe, The extracted files are in C:\CanoScan\CNQL50
(C:\CanoScan is a hidden folder) , C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\CNQL50 and a file
C:\WINDOWS\INF\Cnql50.inf. (C:\WINDOWS\INF is a hidden folder) These are the
files that where extracted when you double clicked SetupSG.exe.

Now the computer is ready for you to plug in the scanner.
When you plug in the scanner Windows should install the TWAIN driver.

The key to the way that this works is the Cnql50.inf file in the Window\INF
folder.
When you plug in the Scanner, Windows looks for the inf file and performs
the TWAIN driver install.

Although maybe no longer relevant, pure frustration while trying t
get my Canoscan Lide 50 working with XP SP2 prompted me to respond

I have exactly the same symptoms, and Canon is just not of any help
My only advise - do not buy a Canon scanner as if you do, you are o
your own! Canon maintains that the Canoscan Lide 50 was tested on X
without any problems. Impossible, as the driver does not install
:mad

Does the software install at all.......or is it a case of the software
installs but the scanner isnt recognised?

DB :)

I'm experiencing the same problem. the files are extracted and i
looks like its all happening but then when you plug in the usb cabl
to the scanner it detects it but only as "CANOSCAN" an
then Windows takes you into the standard install wizzard.
I've had this problem before with another device, but was able t
choose the driver for windows to install from a list of drivers. Th
new device had been added to the list. But in this case when i trie
to do the same i can't see any driver that looks like its to do wit
Canoscan. Hmm
Does anyone else have any ideas

Make sure you are downloading the correct driver for the correct
scanner. This happens all the time.

Does your scanner look like this:
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/app/images/scanner/lide50_125x125.gif
Notice the back of it has a black bar that goes straight across. Tis
also has four buttons on the front. This is the CanoScan LiDE 50.

Or does it look like this one:
[img:0acfd740c2]http://consumer.usa.canon.com/app/images/scanner/lide30_125x125.gif[/img:0acfd740c2]
Notice the back of this one has a black bar, but it comes up to a
point in the middle. This one only has three buttons on the front.
This is the CanoScan LiDE 30.

Good luck.

Canon lide 50

I have spent hours trying to install this scanner. The problem turned out to be the scanner is mis-labeled. If you look at the picture on the Canon website the Lide 50 has 4 buttons. Mine only has 3 like the lide 30 picture. I downloaded the lide 30 drivers and they installed perfectly the first time.

I hope this helps

fix for scanner install

The problem for me was that setup placed the files in the wrong place. I did a search for these files and copied them and then put them in the below places:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cnqu70.dll
C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\CNQL30\cisds.ds
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\color\cns12i.icc

Scanner then worked.
