If nothing happens, then download the driver again. You must have gotten a
bad downloaded file. I found that SetupSG.exe does not ask to reboot.
What does happen, is a dialog comes up telling of extracting files, then
leaves the screen.
The dialog looks like this:
http://www.carlmcmillan.com/Temp/
I will remove this page very soon.
Just to be safe, Reboot the computer manually after this dialog leaves the
screen.
Make sure you have downloaded the correct driver. For Windows XP, it is the
first one under "Drivers".

CanoScan LiDE50 Scanner Driver ScanGear CS Ver. 7.1.3.3 for
Windows XP
You do not "enter a command". You go to My computer, navigate to the
location where SetupSG.exe is located, then with the mouse you put the
cursor on the filename "SetupSG.exe" and click the left button quickly,
twice. (Click, Click).
After double clicking SetupSG.exe You will see on the screen a dialog that
tells you, Files are being extracted. Then after the dialog is gone. You
plug in the scanner and turn it on, Windows with then install the software
when it detects the scanner on the USB port. (It takes a few seconds, for
Windows to detect the scanner).
For Your Information:
The following assumes that Windows XP is installed on C:.
You may have to configure Windows Explorer to show hidden, System folders
and files.
After the running SetupSG.exe, The extracted files are in C:\CanoScan\CNQL50
(C:\CanoScan is a hidden folder) , C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\CNQL50 and a file
C:\WINDOWS\INF\Cnql50.inf. (C:\WINDOWS\INF is a hidden folder) These are the
files that where extracted when you double clicked SetupSG.exe.
Now the computer is ready for you to plug in the scanner.
When you plug in the scanner Windows should install the TWAIN driver.
The key to the way that this works is the Cnql50.inf file in the Window\INF
folder.
When you plug in the Scanner, Windows looks for the inf file and performs
the TWAIN driver install.
