My husband & I just upgraded to XP yesterday and
discovered that there are no drivers for our printer. We
normally would have checked this out before upgrade, but
we just had a baby and wanted to upgrade our computer for
our new digital camera. Is there anyone who can help us
with this problem? I know that this printer is dated, but
it is the best printer we have ever purchased (still
looks brand new)and we use it exclusively for our
documents. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, tiger

I'm sorry, but you're out of luck. This printer is ancient - so ancient in
fact, that there isn't even a native XP driver for it. You have no choice
but to either a) buy a new printer or b) go back to your previous OS.

If there is not xp drivers then the only way you might get lucky is install
win2000 drivers. May work, May work partially or not at all. Best to look
for a replacement.

Don

There aren't any. That printer's so old that the only drivers listed on
Canon's site are for 3.x or 95!

Thanks for your assistance. I guess age is a relative
term because our printer is only 6 years old - I know
that in the computer world that is ancient, but as I
said, it's the best printer we've ever had and even looks
like we just took it out of the box. It worked fine with
Windows 98 and it works better than half of the new
printers out there - we've already purchased 2 other
inkjet printers in the time that we've had our laser
printer!

Not really Six years, in computing terms, is ancient. In 1997 there were
only 2 versions of Windows in common usage, 3.x and 95. 98 had only just
been released. Just because "it worked fine with 98" doesn't mean it will
work under XP. There are only two driver versions that will work under XP -
2000 and XP (whether MS or manufacturer supplied). As that printer is /far/
too old to have either, you either go back to 98 or you purchase a new
laser.

I have an Epson Stylus Colour 900 that's given me five years of faithful
service, and it runs under XP using the 2000 driver. It is the best printer
I've ever owned, churning out crisp text and vivid graphics, even after all
these years. The cartridges are huge and it doesn't baulk at a 200-copy
newsletter run (with compatible cartridges it works out cheaper than
photocopying at the corner shop); but, sadly, there's going to come a time
when it's no longer compatible (when that'll be I don't know, as I don't
know the ERD for the next Windows release, it could be good for another
couple of years). Yes, when that time comes, I'll be sorry to see it go, but
I'll have to accept that, if I want to have the latest Windows, then I'll
have to sacrifice some of my hardware to the Windows god.

Then his solution is to go back to Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 or just drop it
off some cliff.

LOL!! Exactly!
