I checked the status of my Canon colour aser printer and it advises me that
I will require a drum replacement soon. These things aren't cheap costing a
1/3 of the value of the printer.

I was under the impressions that I would get 1000's of pages of print before
having to replace it, some websites quoting up to 20,000 black pages.

I have done just over 1700 black and just over 1100 colour pages, isn't this
a little too early for a drum replacement? I also haven't replaced two of
the colour toners. Surely the drum should outlast the toners a few over?
Any hints on how I can make the drum last longer?

Regards

The drum is rated at 20,000 monochrome or 5,000 colour pages.
So it depends on how early the printer warns you that you will soon need a drum
unit. It probably does so based on an algorithm that takes into account the
combined colour and monochrome counts in which case I guess the drum is about
1/3 done, maybe it's an early warning. The toners are rated at 4,000 pages
colour and 5,000 pages black (at 5% coverage) so depending on the average
coverage of the pages you print the toner life and drum life appear to be
similar unless you only print black.

I suspect its a four pass machine which means the colour pages count
four times, so on that basis you have printed 6100 faces. What is the
indication in the manual as to its expected length? Could it be a date
activated thing? How long have you had the machine? Does the manual give
an indication of how soon before it is necessary to replace it the
warning comes up? The drum might last longer with longer print runs,
have you been doing lots of single copy printing? What is the office
environment like?
